UPS battery is electro-chemical devices whose ability to store and deliver power slowly decreases over time. While not limited to protecting any particular type of equipment, a ups is typically used to protect computers, data centers, telecommunication equipment or other electrical equipment where an unexpected power disruption could cause injuries, fatalities, serious business disruption or data loss. In simply terms, ups backup battery is a battery that will give you an opportunity of having some kind of back up for your companies work if the power would ever happen to fall of some reason. If so, it is an important device for company or others. Hence, maintaining the battery is also necessary anyway.
Battery requires maintenance like putting distilled water in the battery cells, cleaning the carbon deposits on the Battery terminals & poles, applying of petroleum jelly, checking specific gravity every two months, etc. All these activities are done, to keep the Battery in good running condition.
Make sure the UPS keeps in contact with its electrical ground at all times. Don't overload it. If it shows signs of misbehavior or malfunction, yank it until it's repaired, or replace it.
Your UPS has a battery inside it. Usually it is a lead acid type (those are the least expensive for the manufacturer), but both lithium and gel-cell batteries are sometimes used.
The battery is by far the most vulnerable and failure-prone part of your UPS. If you have your UPS long enough, you will probably have battery problems. Once every six months to a year or so you should recalibrate your UPS's battery sensor, and once every several years you will have to replace the batteries.
In fact, ups battery is generally sealed maintenance-free lead acid batteries, so if you know the lead acid battery, I think you can easily maintain the ups battery. The same way is to check the exterior and interior of the battery to see whether there is some lead sulfate crystals. Then test whether the battery terminals are loose and measure the charging voltage of the battery terminal. Of course, you need to know the right environmental temperature of the ups battery, which is between 0-4- avoid direct sunlight and clean air. Besides, you also need to inspect and test the ups battery by a trained filed technician to ensure they are in good condition.
For larger UPS models, service and maintenance of batteries are critical to the reliability of the UPS. Periodic preventive maintenance not only extends battery string life by preventing loose connections and removing corrosion, but it can help identify ailing batteries before they fail. Even though sealed batteries are sometimes referred to as "maintenance-free," they still require scheduled service, as "maintenance-free" refers only to the fact that they do not require replacement fluid.
