Perhaps the most common use for a sealed lead acid battery is for brownouts. That is extremely handy when you are inside your house and there is a sudden power failure of some sort. If you know how to properly set it up, a sealed lead acid battery is the most ideal power source for an emergency lighting during such emergencies. What we ordinary mortals know is that sealed lead acid batteries are used to start the car or any motor vehicle for that matter. Sometimes known as SLA battery in automotive industry parlance, sealed lead acid battery is used for SLI or starting, lighting and igniting internal combustion engines or what we know as gasoline engines. You can imagine how useless a car becomes when there is no power in the SLA battery or you might even had experienced it one time or another while you are in a vehicle and it simply would not start. SLA batteries are also used for traction purposes (locomotion or propulsion) such as electric-powered light vehicles primarily those golf carts used going around the greens.
There are primarily two types of batteries in use today: the primary or non-rechargeable and the secondary or rechargeable battery. Of the two, it is the SLA rechargeable battery that is more common because of cost reasons. If you are using batteries frequently, it simply does not make dollar sense, to keep buying a new battery once it is fully discharged. So depending on the frequency and type of use, it is more practical to have an SLA rechargeable battery. The most common battery is the 12v sealed lead acid battery which is rechargeable. It is also the oldest type of battery which was invented in 1859.
A sealed lead acid battery is evaluated by a host of factors such as its energy-to-weight ratio (the second lowest in this category), the energy-to-volume ratio (also low in this regard) and power-to-weight ratio. However, a sealed lead acid battery can be redesigned or re-configured to suit a specific purpose. This is accomplished by changing the surge current depending on the type of usage. The car battery we usually know is a starting battery, meaning this sealed lead acid battery is for starting only to prevent any damage caused by a deep electrical discharge.
The advantages of using sealed them, especially if they have a lead-tin chemical base, are as follows:
* There is greater volumetric power generated by these batteries per unit weight.
* The cycle-lives of these batteries range between 200 and 300.
* The standby life of a sealed lead acid battery can go up to 15 years.
* These batteries deliver high stable voltage because of their low internal resistance. They also afford greater flexibility of operations because if there is a flat discharge, the discharge and recharge periods are very rapid.
* The temperature range in which these batteries can operate is substantial, ranging from -60 degrees Celsius to +80 degrees Celsius. Similarly, the atmospheric pressure range for operations is Vacuum to eight atmospheres.
* Added to their performance qualities, they are highly tolerant of shock and vibration because of their rugged external construction.
* These batteries are twice as environment-friendly as beer cans; aluminium soft drink cans, glass bottles, newspapers, and tires because nearly the entire battery lead is recycled.
Another type of a sealed lead acid battery is the deep-cycle battery that is fully and regularly discharged. This is very common in forklifts, golf carts and hybrid cars. The sealed lead acid battery is used in our offices without many people knowing about it – in the uninterruptible power supply devices in our personal or desktop computers.
