Note that for long term float service, such as backup power systems that are seldom discharged, the float voltage should be around 13.02 to 13.20 volts.
Most garage and consumer (automotive) type battery chargers are bulk charge only, and have little (if any) voltage regulation. They are fine for a quick boost to low batteries, but not to leave on for long periods. Among the regulated chargers, there are the voltage regulated ones. If there are set to the correct voltages for your batteries, they will keep the batteries charged without damage.

Float charging, one working way of lead acid battery pack, is to connect the battery pack and power line in parallel to load circuit. The constant charging voltage is a little higher than its open-circuit voltage and it depends on a small electric charge delivered by power line to compensate self discharge of the storage battery pack so as to keep it long time in the full charge standby mode then not over charge. In the long-time usage of lead acid battery, it might happen that the float charging is low. Why cause that? Maybe the usage is not proper or the quality has something wrong.
The long-time floating charging use or not effective maintenance causes the floating charging voltage low of the single or more batteries. The single battery is lower than 2.20V. Confirmatory analysis showed that new batteries before they go out experienced the capacity, float charging, open-circuit voltage, internal resistance etc matching sets, so the discreteness of new batteries’ float charging is small. With the continuous use, the slight difference of the lead acid battery that must exist in manufacturing process will gradually be expanded, such as the difference of open valve voltage, self discharge, and plates. The open valve voltage’s difference will cause the different water loss. If the condition permission, you can use the low current to charge and discharge for 1 to 3 recycles, and then the disabled batteries’ voltage and capacity will get a good recovery. But for the serious sulfation battery, you have to replace it.
If the float charging voltage is low or the setting value is lower than 10%, such as lower than 2.0V, then the battery might be micro short circuit or short circuit. You can do the electric discharge validation, because the short-circuit battery can’t afford the discharge test. If the discharge voltage goes down fast, or down quickly to 0V, then you have to replace the disabled battery. If it is normal, you can use the above methods to recover it.

The Valve of GEL Battery


Gel battery is different from AGM VRLA battery, which uses the gel electrolyte, allowing you to mount the battery in any direction, even upside down, giving more flexibility to installers.
A gel cell is a “recombinant” battery. This means that the oxygen that is normally produced on the positive plate in all lead acid batteries recombines with the hydrogen given off by the negative plate. The “recombination” of hydrogen and oxygen produces water (H which replaces the moisture in the battery. Therefore, the battery is maintenance-free, as it never needs watering.
The oxygen is trapped in the cell by special pressurized sealing vents. It travels to the negative plate through tiny fissures or cracks in the gelled electrolyte.
The sealing vent is critical to the performance of the gel cell. The cell must maintain a positive internal pressure. Otherwise the recombination of the gasses will not take place, and the cell will dry out and not perform.
In addition, the valve must safely release any excess pressure that may be produced during overcharging. Otherwise the cell would be irreparably damaged.
It’s important to note that a gel cell must never be opened once it leaves the factory. If opened, the cell loses its pressure, and the outside air will “poison” the plates and cause an imbalance that destroys the recombination chemistry.

Most batteries available in the market are lithium ion or lead acid battery, but some are gel battery with gel electrolyte, which allow you to mount the battery in any direction, even upside down, giving more flexibility to installers. Different from other batteries, this gel battery can be normal charged by just inserting the charger between the battery and power source. But how should I charge a gel battery? First be ready for a battery charger near the gel battery. In general, gel batteries should be charged with a gel battery charger, but if you don’t have one, you can use a lead acid charger, as long as it has variable charger settings.
Next, put the battery on a battery tray on a stable work surface. Gel batteries are fairly heavy, so you want to make sure the work surface doesn’t collapse. Of course, you need to carry this to the battery tray if you can. If not, don’t do that you can’t, and ask some one for help.
Then start to connect the battery and the charger. Attach the metal spring-loaded clamp on the end of the charger’s red cable to the positive terminal of the gel battery. The positive terminal has a “+” marked on or near the terminal. Then attach the clamp on the end of the charger’s black cable to negative terminal of the battery. The negative terminal has a “- “marked on or near the terminal. Don’t mix the connection. The red cable attach the “+” while the black cable attach the “-“.
Plug the charger into an electrical outlet. Check that the charge limit illuminates on the charger, which confirms that the gel battery is being charged. A gel battery charger regulates the charging rate and turns off automatically once the battery fully charged. It is well known that it is usual for a battery to get warm during a charge, but if you find it’s getting hot to the touch, please turn off the charger and let the battery cool before continuing.
Finally, remove the clamps from the battery terminals when it is full charged. Leave the gel battery for a few hours before using it, which allows it time to settle the charge it’s received.  A perfect charge is over. Just use it as usual. Please note: don’t attach the red cable to “-“and black cable to “+”. At this moment, maybe it won’t damage it, but it must shorten the lifespan of the gel battery. So don’t make this mistake when you are ready to charge the gel battery.
