What is the lead acid battery?  A battery is a device in which chemical energy is transformed into electrical energy. That energy can be used in a controlled manner.
What’s more, how do these batteries work? In a normal battery we have three basic elements: one plate made of lead, an electrolyte of sulfuric acid and another plate made of lead oxide. When the battery is discharged, the sulfuric acid in the electrolyte reacts with the lead and lead oxide releasing electricity, forming lead sulfate. This leaves a watery electrolyte solution. When a battery is completely discharged, what is left is lead sulfate and water. When you start recharging the battery, the lead sulfate is broken apart by the electric current. This returns the system to the original elements: lead and lead oxide on the plates and sulfuric acid in the electrolyte, for the most part.
We said for the most part because an incomplete recharge is going to leave behind some lead sulfate. The next time you use the energy from the battery, the newly formed sulfate is going to attach to the left over sulfates making stronger sulfates. The problem is that a normal battery recharge is not going to be able to break them down completely. So you will have more and more sulfates that now are not breaking up and gradually are shortening the life of your batteries.
For the owners of lead acid battery, some general basic knowledge is very important to prolong the life. The maintenance tips are no exception. Maintaining your lead acid batteries, you need to check them on a regular basis to be sure they are getting charged. Use a hydrometer to check the specific gravity of your lead-acid batteries. If batteries are cycled very deeply and then recharged quickly, the specific gravity reading will be rower than it should be, because the electrolyte at the top of the battery may not have mixed with the “charged” electrolyte.
Check the electrolyte level in wet-cell batteries at least four times a year and top each cell off with distilled water. Do not add water to discharged batteries. Electrolyte is absorbed when batteries are discharged. If you add water at this time, and then recharge the battery, electrolyte will overflow and make a mess.

Some General Types of Deep Cycle Batteries

Lead acid batteries are commonly classified as starting batteries, deep cycle batteries and marine batteries. The author wrote this article to tell something about types of deep cycle battery. Deep cycle batteries are used to store electricity in autonomous power systems, for emergency back-up and electric vehicles. These batteries are designed to discharge by as much as 80% of their capacity over thousands of charging and discharging cycles. Flooded – These batteries have a conventional liquid electrolyte. Standard types have removable caps so that the electrolyte can be diluted and the specific gravity measured, such batteries are supplied dry and you add distilled water. Standard flooded batteries are cheap and if they are kept topped up they are not overly sensitive to high charging voltages. Sealed batteries are supplied pre-flooded and have fixed valves to allow gases to vent during use however, they will still leak if inverted and the electrolyte can not be replenished so that over charging will cause damage.
Gelled Electrolyte – The electrolyte is a jelly and so will not leak. The electrolyte can not be diluted so that over charging must be avoided and these batteries may only last for 2 or 3 years in hot climates although with good care they can last for 5 years.
Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) Batteries – The electrolyte is held between the plates absorbed in a fine boron-silicate mat. Like gelled electrolyte batteries they will not leak acid but they can withstand more careless treatment and are less sensitive to over charging since they are designed to retain vented gases. AGM batteries can also stand for 30 days in a totally discharged state and still be recharged successfully. The major drawback to these batteries is that they cost between 2 or 3 times as much as flooded batteries.
No matter which types of deep cycle batteries you have, they are all lead acid battery. They used the similar theory and different electrolyte. Maybe some of them are maintenance free batteries, but we are still careful of disposing of these batteries. Anyway, batteries adopted chemical reactions to store electric energy so that we need to know their basic characteristics to avoid unnecessary hurt.

Gel battery is filled with a gel substance, referred to as a gel electrolyte that replaces that some of us know as battery acid. The gel electrolyte is sulfuric acid combined with silica. Gel batteries contain a valve regulating system. This system allows gas to be released or expelled when needed. Along with the gas being expelled, the gel substance contains calcium, instead of the antimony that is found in traditional batteries. The calcium keeps the gel from gassing in the same way a traditional battery might.
There are several methods for charging gel cell batteries; however, constant voltage charging is the best way. For this type of charging, a fixed, regulated voltage source is used to charge the battery. Special attention must be paid to the exact charging voltage and the initial charging current.
There are two modes for constant voltage charging: fast charging and float charging. Smart chargers, which are available commercially, automatically switch between these two modes. In addition, the most sophisticated chargers will monitor the ambient temperature and adjust the charging parameters accordingly.
For fast charging (aka cyclic charging), the battery is charged with a fixed charging voltage until the terminal voltage reaches 2.40 to 2.45 volts per cell (14.4 to 14.7 volts for a 12-volt battery) at 20° C. The battery is then held at this voltage until the charging current drops to a value of 0.01 x C amps (where C is the battery's amp-hour rating). At this point, the battery is fully charged and you must either stop the charging or switch to the float-charging mode. Continual charging in the fast charge mode will overheat the battery and damage it. Do not let the battery voltage exceed 2.45 volts per cell or allow the charge current to exceed 0.20 x C amps.
For float charging (aka standby service), the battery is connected to a constant voltage source of 2.25 to 2.30 volts per cell (13.5 to 13.8 volts for a 12-volt battery) at 20° C. Provided that the charging source is regulated at the proper float voltage, the gel battery will establish its own current level and will be maintained in a fully charged condition. Gel cell batteries can be left in the float charge mode for extended periods of time without damage. This mode is often used to maintain gel cell batteries used in backup power applications.

Ask a battery expert about this. After refilling the battery acid, change the plates of your battery. You can do this by a group or individually. Afterward, charge the battery using a trickle charger with 1-amp settings. If this does not work, proceed to the next step.
5. Prepare the ingredient to fix the rust problem on the lead acid battery. Buy magnesium sulfate. This is the primary chemical used to remove the rust from the lead. You will find this in any local pharmacy or department store.
6. Combine magnesium sulfate with a quart of distilled water. Before you combine the two, make sure to heat the distilled water to about 150 degrees. Afterward, mix the magnesium sulfate with the water. Use only about 10 tablespoons full. Stir the water until you dissolve the Epsom salt.
7. Place the mixed solution to the lead acid battery. After mixing the two substances, pour it inside the battery. Use only a half quart of the solution you made. Afterward, place the caps back. Shake the battery thoroughly to mix the substances.
