Car Owners need to take care of the car battery
If you have a car, I believe that you know a little about checking the car, because you don’t have that time to send it frequently to the repair shop if that’s only a simple little problem. Most of them might open the truck to take out of some prepared tools to check the car. Of course, it includes checking the engine and the car battery which is used to get started the car and supply the power for the accessories. Talking of the battery, you may not know that it is lead acid battery which is a technical term. In general, we just heard of Li-ion rechargeable battery, car battery, motorcycle battery, solar battery, AA battery, AAA battery etc. But in fact, batteries like car battery and motorcycle battery are all lead acid battery which uses a reversible chemical reaction to store electric energy.
The lead acid battery can be utilized with a permutation of lead plates or grids and an electrolyte consisting of a diluted sulphuric acid to change electrical energy into potential chemical energy and back. Scientifically it is considered that lead acid batteries are harmful for our health as it may create burns and other permanent damage if we come in close contact with it due to the use of diluted sulphuric acid electrolyte. This is its disadvantage but that doesn’t limit its usage. However, it is worth to note it needs maintenance when used. Add distilled water if it is required, because the water evaporates in the chemical reaction process.
It is worth to mention that the car battery is generally maintenance free. So the car owners don’t pay much attention to that. But another thing that needs to note is to jump-start the car battery if it is just discharging but not dead. It is a simple operation and spends a little time. Since you knew the car battery is lead acid battery that is harmful for health if improperly disposed of, you need to be careful when jump starting the battery.
Use extreme caution when handling electrolyte and keep an acid neutralizing solution—such as baking soda or household ammonia mixed with water—readily available. When handling battery acid, you always need to wear proper eye, face and hand protection. If the electrolyte is splashed into an eye, immediately force the eye open and flood it with clean, cool water for at least 15 minutes. Get prompt medical attention. If electrolyte is taken internally, drink large quantities of water or milk. DO NOT induce vomiting. Call a physician immediately. Neutralize with baking soda any electrolyte that spills on a vehicle or in the work area. After neutralizing, rinse contaminated area clean with water. To prepare electrolyte of a desired specific gravity, always pour the concentrated acid slowly into the water; DO NOT pour water into the acid. Always stir the water while adding small amounts of acid. If noticeable heat develops, allow the solution to cool before continuing to add acid.
Generally a car battery would be used for about 2 years since the lead acid battery will self discharge if not in use. Of course, you need to check and maintain it on a regular basis, or its life is a little shorter than it should be. It is better to maintain the car battery to prolong its lifespan rather than spending time and money to choose and buy it. So car owners, pay attention to this and it is useful for you.

Can lead acid battery be used with cell phones?
Batteries are always talking about when the new products are launched by many brands worldwide ranging from car firms and cellphone brands. You will find lead acid battery in the car like Ford, Nissan, BMW, Hyundai, Honda, Maruti SUZUKI etc. However, the lithium ion battery is found together with mobile phones like Apple, HTC, Blackberry, Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericson etc. As most of you know cars equip with lead acid battery and cell phones equip with lithium ion battery, have you ever imagined why former is better for the cars and the latter for cell phones? Why does a car use lead acid battery rather than lithium ion battery?
In this type Lead and Lead Dioxide are used for making the anode and cathode submerged in 1/3rd Sulphuric Acid acting as the Electrolyte. Chemical Reactions taking place inside converts the two electrodes into Lead Sulphate and when one recharges the discharged battery the process is partially reversed in order to bring back the initial reactants starting the reaction i.e Converting Lead Sulphate to Lead and Lead Dioxide.
It is one of the oldest types and are big & bulky owing to the Lowest Energy-to-Weight and Energy-to-Volume ratio design currently existing in this world. The reason for them to be used in cars is they have a tremendous Surge-to-Weight ratio eventually supplying high surge of power required in car starters and other machines as well. Another important fact is that these batteries are very cheap to produce but lack the quality of imparting steady, low or middling supply of electricity over a long period of time along with longer recharging time.
Comparing to lead acid batteries, lithium ion battery has High Power-to-Weight and Power-to-Volume ratio and they even provide steady supply for longer periods, which uses a variety of substances with Graphite being the anode while lithium cobalt oxide, lithium iron phosphate or lithium manganese oxide or others as cathode. Lithium migrates between the electrodes through an Electrolyte mixture of lithium salt in an organic solvent, during the electricity producing reaction. Recharging revert the chemical processes subsequently bringing lithium back to the terminals. Batteries with high surge currents are also available. Apart from all above qualities they have certain drawbacks as well which include: High Production Costs; Inability to hold Charge Decays when not in use where on the other hand Lead Acid batteries go on working with appreciable performance for several years.
On the ground of the different mechanism, lithium ion battery couldn’t replace lead acid battery to be used in a car. And lead acid battery can not be designed to the same size with a li-ion battery which is equipped with cell phones. At present, the technology is not that mature to concentrate the energy of a lead acid battery. Therefore, they each have their own field which is difficult to be changed at least not now.

Is Lead Acid Battery Worth to Use up to now?
Lead acid battery has been used for over 150 years. This is a strong proof that it is reliable, mature secondary batteries, globally manufactured and therefore a widely understood technology. In simple terms, lead acid battery is worth to use up to now though it contains lead and acid which is harmful for health.
Invented in 1859 by French physician Gaston Plante, lead acid batteries store electrical energy through a reversible chemical reaction. It uses a combination of lead plates or grids and an electrolyte consisting of a diluted sulphuric acid to convert electrical energy into potential chemical energy and back again. It changes from lead oxide when charged to lead sulfate when discharged.
Moreover, a lead acid battery can be ruined if it is discharged completely, as many motorists discover to their cost when trying to start their car on an icy morning. Lead acid batteries with thicker electrodes can tolerate such “deep” discharges better than those with thin ones, but only at the expense of making a heavy battery even heavier.
If you have a car, you will notice that there are some crystal impurities on the surface of the automotive battery. This means that the battery needs to be maintained. And these crystal impurities might be “sulfation”. If you don’t deal with the sulfation and let it continue to deteriorate, you just give up this battery because it never stores energy any longer. Therefore, it is also very important to check and maintain the lead acid battery on a regular basis. Then this may prolong the life of the battery.
First, give the battery full charged after every use. Lead acid batteries will self discharge if not used. Next check the external and internal of the battery. If any crack and leakage is found, it means you have to replace it. The water will be evaporated in the chemical reaction process. So check the water level. Add distilled water to each cell to bring the electrolyte up to the manufacturer’s recommended “full” level.
You could not use the lead acid battery all the time. So give it a cool environment to store and keep batteries cool in hot climates. Heat dramatically reduces a battery's life. And store the battery full charged. If you leave a battery unused for long periods of time, the battery will self discharge and might be sulfation, then not to store energy any more. Therefore if you must leave batteries unused, store them in a charged state. Storing discharged batteries leads to the inability of the battery to hold a charge.
Whether a battery is worth to use or not, depends on what types of batteries you choose. The brand of a lead acid battery is very important. Leoch International, founded in 1999, is a listed company, which is a professional manufacturer of lead acid battery. They continuously insist the faith which is reasonable price, reliable quality, timely delivery and friendly service. It is a reliable brand like many other famous batteries manufacturers.
To choose a battery is just to pick up a reliable company. If you want to read more, please visit: http://www.leoch.com

What are the harmful effects and safety of a lead acid battery
A battery is an electrochemical device to convert chemical energy to electrical energy to provide power to our electronic devices. But the chemical used in battery will pollute the environment heavily if the batteries are improperly disposed of, especially lead acid battery.
Placed in a landfill, these batteries may over time leach lead or leak acid into the environment.
All batteries eventually lose their electrical charge. When this occurs, most people replace the old battery with a new one. Placed in a landfill, these lead acid batteries may over time leach lead or leak acid that are toxic into the environment.
Lead acid battery contains both lead and sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid is flammable and can cause chemical burns. Lead from batteries can seep into the ground, and can pollute the soil. Either material can contaminate a water source, making the water unsafe to drink.
Burning the batteries in public area will pollute the lakes and streams as the metals vaporize into the air when burned and it may cause burns or danger to eyes and skin. Contribute to heavy metals that potentially may leach from solid waste landfills. Batteries waste in riverside will pollute the water with strong acid. Animals or human drinking from the water will be harm by the pollution of the water.
As with most devices, the material composing a lead acid battery can be harmful if not handled properly. It is imperative, when working with lead acid batteries to take certain precautions. To help avoid risk of danger and injury, observe these precautions when handling or working with a lead acid battery:
- Wear ANSI (American National Standards Institute) approved safety glasses or goggles and a face shield.
- Wear proper clothing to protect your face, hands and body.
- Make sure your work area is well-ventilated.
- Never lean over the battery while boosting, testing or charging.
- Keep all ignition sources away from the battery. Cigarettes, flames or sparks could cause a battery to explode.
- Always shield eyes and face from battery.
- Do not charge or use booster cables or adjust post connections without proper instructions and training.
- KEEP VENT CAPS TIGHT AND LEVEL.
- In the event of an accident, flush with water and call a physician immediately.
- KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
In terms of these harmful effects, please follow these precautions to protect yourself when disposing of a lead acid battery. Don’t throw out the battery at will because they can be recycled for reuse to save energy and money.

Remember the past of lead acid battery, look into the future
Obama invested some grant to advance the performance of lead acid battery, using lead-carbon electrodes for micro and mild hybrid applications. This investment in battery technology for electric vehicles proved that lead acid battery are never out of date and the researchers are still keeping bringing in new technology. He said, "Lead-acid batteries, which are used for transportation and stand-by applications, account for half of the rechargeable battery market. Although alternative battery chemistries are growing in popularity, such chemistries are not expected to diminish the demand for lead-acid. "
Lead acid batteries have a bright future, and of course we should not forget its past. The first fully functional, commercially viable recombinant lead-acid products came on the market in the early 1970s. However, some of the principles necessary for such a technology were known long before this. For example, the gelling of sulfuric acid with silica was proposed in the late 1800s, and eventually led to the development of gelled-electrolyte lead-acid batteries. Gelled sealed cells were reportedly manufactured as early as 1934 by Elektrotechnische Fabrik Sonneberg in Germany, but apparently on a very limited basis.
Thomas Edison first proposed the principle of gas recombination within a battery in 1912; and over the next 60 years various attempts were made to commercialize this concept for the lead-acid couple. Most approaches were not successful because of excessive cost, bulk, and/or complexity—or they just did not work.
In the late 1960s, a number of prominent lead-acid battery companies had development programs directed toward producing a viable sealed battery, spurred by the successful commercialization of nickel-cadmium technology during the previous two decades. It was clear that the chemistries were very similar, but the key stumbling block was the amount of electrolyte necessary in the lead-acid system to realize acceptable discharge capacities and still have sufficient void volume within the cell to facilitate oxygen recombination. This dilemma was solved by the development of a glass microfiber separator, which has the ability to hold large quantities of electrolyte and, at the same time, has a porosity in excess of 90%. About 27 years ago, Gates came out with the first fully commercialized product line. Since then, dozens of other companies have followed suit, and, today, valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries are recognized as a new, significant technology.
From the past to the present, I can’t imagine life without the lead acid battery. Lead acid batteries have myriad uses and are one of the most useful batteries with the longest life cycle, the greatest energy density per pound, and the most mature recycling infrastructure of similarly priced batteries. Has been used more than 140 years, these batteries are reliable, mature secondary batteries, globally manufactured and therefore a widely understood technology.

Just some ideas of me to help prevent pollution of batteries
When people talk about lead acid battery, they will think of car battery which is close to our life. You might not know the principle of lead acid battery. It stores electricity energy through a reversible chemical reaction. It can be utilized with a permutation of lead plates or grids and an electrolyte consisting of a diluted sulphuric acid to change electrical energy into potential chemical energy and back. Scientifically it is considered that lead acid batteries are harmful for our health as it may create burns and other permanent damage if we come in close contact with it due to the use of diluted sulphuric acid electrolyte. Sulfuric acid is so corrosive that it is seriously damaging to the human skin. Hence, it is high advisable to protect ourselves properly while using this electrolyte. And so, any materials leak during production or unattended disposal could result both environmental problems as well as health hazards.
What should we do as we know its disadvantages? How do we help prevent pollution of lead acid battery? These are just some ideas of me to help prevent pollution of batteries as following:
1. Service batteries regularly and change them only when necessary.
2. Encourage customers to use longer-lasting batteries.
3. Recycle used lead-acid batteries. Batteries not recycled must be disposed as hazardous waste.
4. Store and secure all batteries in a manner that prevents leakage of acid or hydrogen gas to the environment. Indoor storage on an acid-resistant rack or tub is recommended. If stored outdoors, batteries should be kept on an impermeable surface such as a concrete slab that has secondary containment, and the storage area should be under cover to prevent acid run-off.
5. Do not stack batteries as they may fall and crack.
6. Inspect batteries weekly to ensure there are no leaks or cracks.
7. Keep a neutralizing agent such as baking soda near by in case of an acid spill.
Check and maintain the lead acid battery on a regular basis, and then the battery can be used for longer time. Therefore, you will use less battery and less pollution will be found. Anyway, sooner or later, batteries are always recycled to reuse. It can help save natural resources, energy, clean air and water, landfill space, and money. Why do we produce the pollution in the green environment? Just do a little together to prevent the pollution of lead acid battery.
